The Disciples of Jesus: Role Models for Muslims

Faithful Supporters of Allah’s Messenger

Among the most inspiring figures in the Qur’an are the disciples (al-Hawariyyun) of Jesus (as). When Jesus sensed disbelief from his people, he asked, “Who will stand up with me for Allah?” The disciples replied, “We will stand up for Allah. We believe in Allah, so bear witness that we have submitted” (Q 3:52). Their response was immediate, courageous, and unconditional. They are a model for every believer who finds themselves in a minority surrounded by disbelief.

The Request for the Table Spread

The disciples demonstrated a unique quality: they asked for a tangible sign to strengthen their faith. They said, “O Jesus, son of Mary! Would your Lord be willing to send down to us a table spread with food from heaven?” (Q 5:112). Jesus cautioned them, “Fear Allah if you are truly believers” (Q 5:112). But they explained their sincere intention: “We only wish to eat from it to reassure our hearts, to verify you are indeed truthful to us, and to become its witnesses” (Q 5:113).

Jesus’s Humble Prayer

In response, Jesus did not act independently. He turned to Allah in humble supplication: “O Allah, our Lord! Send us from heaven a table spread with food as a feast for us—the first and last of us—and as a sign from You. Provide for us! You are indeed the Best Provider” (Q 5:114). This moment reveals the true relationship between Jesus and his Lord. He was a servant who asked, not a god who commanded. Allah answered his prayer, and the table spread became a lasting sign.

Quranic Praise for Righteous Christians

The Qur’an acknowledges that not all Christians are the same. Some are upright and sincere. “You will surely find the most affectionate toward believers are those who say, ‘We are Christians.’ That is because among them are priests and monks, and they are not arrogant” (Q 5:82). When they hear what has been revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, their eyes overflow with tears because they recognize the truth. They say, “Our Lord, we believe, so count us among the witnesses” (Q 5:83).

The Ultimate Reward

These sincere Christians are promised a great reward. “So Allah will reward them for what they said with Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever. And that is the reward of the good-doers” (Q 5:85). The Qur’an does not paint all Christians with a single brush. It distinguishes between those who cling to false doctrines out of arrogance and those who sincerely seek the truth. The disciples of Jesus, and those who follow their path of sincere submission, are honoured in this life and the next.

A Witness Before Allah

On the Day of Judgment, Jesus will testify about his followers. He will say, “I never told them anything except what You ordered me to say: ‘Worship Allah—my Lord and your Lord!’ And I was witness over them as long as I remained among them” (Q 5:117). The true disciples of Jesus, past and present, are those who worship Allah alone, follow His messengers, and race toward good deeds. They are not a separate religion but part of the single stream of submission that began with Adam and continues until the end of time.
