Was Jesus Crucified? The Bible Says No!
The Foundation of Christianity
The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus (as) are presented in Christian theology as the central events of salvation. The Apostle Paul declared, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile” (1 Corinthians 15:17). Without the crucifixion, Christianity as it is known today collapses. But what if the evidence from the Bible itself and other historical sources points to a different conclusion? What if Jesus was never crucified at all?
The Problem of Anonymous Gospels
None of the four Gospels were written by eyewitnesses. They were composed decades after the events they describe. Scholars agree that the Gospel of Mark was written around 72 CE, Matthew around 85 CE, Luke around 90 CE, and John around 100 CE. The stories about Jesus’s crucifixion circulated orally for decades before being written down by anonymous authors. As the Anglican Bishop Kenneth Cragg admitted, “The Gospels have come through the mind of the Church behind the authors. They represent experience and history.”
Contradictions in the Crucifixion Accounts
The Gospels themselves disagree on basic details. Mark states that the last supper was a Passover meal, meaning Jesus died after the Passover. John states that Jesus died before the Passover meal was eaten. Which is correct? They cannot both be true. The Jewish Talmud provides a different account altogether, stating that Jesus was stoned to death, not crucified (Talmud Sanhedrin 43a). Even early apocryphal gospels, such as the Acts of John from the second century, affirm that Jesus was not crucified.
The Disciples Fled
One of the most overlooked facts in the Gospel accounts is that the disciples were not present at the crucifixion. Mark 14:50 states plainly, “Then everyone deserted him and fled.” If all the disciples fled, who witnessed the crucifixion? No one. The accounts we have are not eyewitness testimony. They are hearsay, speculation, and, as the Qur’an puts it, “conjecture” (Q 4:157).
What the Qur’an Declares
The Qur’an settles the matter with divine authority. Allah declares, “That they said, ‘We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah.’ But they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him. Rather, it was made to appear so to them. Those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no knowledge, but only conjecture to follow. For of a surety, they did not kill him. Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself. And Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise” (Q 4:157-158). The crucifixion was an illusion, a divine test. Jesus was not defeated. He was honoured and raised to his Lord.
